Taxi Driver (1976) – Directed by Martin Scorsese
Taxi Driver is a psychological thriller that explores themes of isolation, mental instability, and urban decay in 1970s New York City. The film stars Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a disillusioned and disturbed Vietnam War veteran who works as a taxi driver at night.
Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is a lonely and socially alienated man who takes on a job as a nighttime cab driver in the crime-ridden streets of New York City. Suffering from insomnia and struggling with feelings of disconnect from the world around him, Travis is increasingly repulsed by the city’s corruption and moral decay. His mental state deteriorates as he becomes obsessed with the idea of cleansing the city of its filth.
Travis fixates on two people: Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a beautiful campaign worker for a local politician, and Iris (Jodie Foster), a 12-year-old prostitute. After an awkward attempt to court Betsy, Travis is rejected, deepening his sense of isolation and resentment. His frustrations build, and he begins to arm himself, preparing for violent action.
In the film’s climactic scenes, Travis stages a violent rescue of Iris from her pimp and the criminal underworld, leading to a bloody showdown. Although his actions are extreme and disturbed, Travis is ironically hailed as a hero for saving Iris, despite the underlying psychosis driving him.
