“Schindler’s List” (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, is a poignant and harrowing historical drama that depicts the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. The film is based on the novel “Schindler’s Ark” by Thomas Keneally and features a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. The film opens in Kraków, Poland, at the onset of World War II. Oskar Schindler, portrayed by Liam Neeson, is a charismatic and opportunistic businessman who arrives in the city with the intent of making a fortune from the war. He joins the Nazi Party to gain access to influential officials and uses his charm and bribes to acquire a factory that produces enamelware for the German military. To run his factory, Schindler enlists the help of Itzhak Stern, played by Ben Kingsley, a Jewish accountant who has contacts within the Jewish community and can help him secure Jewish workers, who are cheaper than Polish laborers due to Nazi policies.
